Why do I create art?

It's impossible to quantify the moment I started creating art. It's the same with any other artist. Who knows at what moment a child picked up a pencil and began drawing not just for the sole sake of drawing? And at that age we weren't quite aware of this complex thing we were engaging ourselves in. And never did we wonder why we wanted to draw.

But now that I am old enough to reflect upon myself, I want to ask myself this question. Why do I create art?

Even then, its difficult to be sure why I do such a thing. Surely it's enjoyable...at times. The products, when produced well can be satisfying—yet they are never truly adequate. Ever. Most of the time art and creating is more of a struggle than anything else. Sure artists are so in love with this taxing activity that we keep coming back for more and more. Yet, even after all these doubts, there is this urge within me that keeps telling me: try again. Do it again. Maybe it's my ultimate goal in this "career" of art.

That just maybe, maybe someday I'll be able to make someone feel that inexplicable, completely unknown thing that transcends beyond words, even beyond the colors and lines are placed on paper—this thing that is beyond anything tangible by any stretch of imagination. Something that at some point, some other artist had instilled in me without intentionally or realizing they had done so.

And that is inspiration.

While that may seem like such a simple answer to such a complicated question, in reality, inspiration only complicates the question. It is a billion factors of everything we have seen, heard, encountered into one. And that we'll create something from it.

But at the core of all of it, Industries of the Blind's one song title explains it in such simple words: I just wanted to make you something beautiful.
